Okay folks….listen up! We have exactly SIX (Yes SIX) months until NanoWrimo. Are you ready? Six months may seem like a long time, but it’s barely enough time for us to get into NanoShape! Get those writer booties in gear and GET READY! Here’s how:

Daily Exercise

Typing takes muscle! That’s right…MUSCLE. If you don’t build those typing muscles, there is no way you will be able to get to the finish line. Here are a few tips for building typing muscles:

  • Weights - tape miniature Hershey bars to all of your fingers for extra weight, then type as usual. The extra weight will help build muscle and you can save the chocolate for Nano month when you are finished! Remember, high reps, low weight!

  • Finger pushups (aka. spider doing pushups on a mirror) - press the tips of all of your fingers together and stretch your palms out, then back in again and again. This can even be done while watching television or talking on the phone.

  • Tap to the music – turn on your favorite music and tap your fingers the beat. Make sure you give all of your fingers the chance to tap…not just your forefinger.

  • Walk – well it’s just good for everything.

  • Clean your bookshelves – it’s good for the arms and shoulders.

  • Wash the tub – builds arm muscles.

  • You get the point…get those fingers a moving!

In order to make up for the ten pounds we are bound to gain from Nano month, we must lose at least ten pounds now to counteract it. A well balanced diet of fruits and veggies will suffice. Watch those carbs! It takes five pounds of chocolate to get a writer through Nano… we want to save our carb calories for that! Don’t forget to take your vitamins.

Gather the Necessities

The following is a list of must-haves for Nano month:

· Chocolate – duh!
· Wine – to relax
· Aspirin – eye strain and muscle strain
· Friends – to bring supplies when needed
· Easy to cook meals – you won’t have time to cook
· Soap – yeah…take showers! Please!
· Vitamin D – you won’t see a lot of sun

Feel free to add to the list!

Just a few pointers for getting ready for NanoWrimo. Hopefully this year there will be the most productive year ever. Good luck to all of you!

That had me laughing. Nano should be a part of our lives in some small way everyday. Keep the apsrin handy.

For some reason NaNo scares the crap out of me, and yet, we pretty much write our first drafts in about month anyways. Just something about making it official, I guess.

Nice. I have a feeling that I won't be participating this year. We'll see. I'm just slow, and I've found that rushing WIPs for me gets me absolutely no where. I may, however, start another NaNo if my current WIPs are finally in querying. We'll see. Great tips!

I'm trying not to laugh out loud as the kids are still asleep (8.30am here - bank holiday Monday).

I LOVED the exercises and I may give those a go...when I get time of course.

I shall still be chortling away at this afternoon.

Like the chocolate is going to last until November? Please . . .

Your post made me laugh out loud - definitely a good thing on a dreary Monday morning. I'm not sure I'll participate this year, though I have done so in the past. Good luck to everyone. I'm going to stop at the store and stock up on chocolate for my finger aerobics. Too funny!

Beth - I haven't participated either...thought I might try! LOL

Windsong - get those fingers moving! ;-)

Cindy - Oh yes...better to be prepared ahead of time. :-)

Guppy - I knew you'd be in!

T. Anne - Check! Plenty of aspirin! he he

Lisa and Laura - girls are good! :-)

Glam - I find it better not to rush also! We are alike in that way!

Martin - :-D Glad you got a laugh out of it!

Scott - yeah...chocolate doesn't last a day in my house. ;-)

This is a BRILLIANT post! You just made my day. You called yourself a newbie in Screaming Guppy's blog. Are you really a newbie? You seem very un-newbie.

Lois - you can do it! I sink in my seat as I say that...wondering if I can LOL

Davin - I'm a newbie! :-) I teach writing...of the academic kind. Maybe it's because I read a lot? I love satirical stuff.

Love the list, especially the wine and chocolate!

I did Nano in 2008.Will be back in 2009.Already have the itty-bitty idea in the back of my heard! Can't wait to see it grow during Nano!

OH, we're suppose to leave our computer to take a shower? Hmm, no wonder my family was grouchy last November! :)

LOL, I love this post! I discovered NaNo two years ago and am proud to say (and actually still surprised with myself) that I "won" both years by achieving the word counts! Ahem. Still working on completing the first one (I changed genres so still need much research and have other projects to finish first) and last year's project actually grew into a real live hold it my very own little hands book! Yay!

I love your checklist to prepare (grin)!

Great blog, glad I found it, definitely will be back!
