Writing Blues

Well folks, I am still plowing along on my manuscript. There are about 74,000 words at the moment. I know it looks like I haven’t had much progress but that’s not the case. Have any of you ever tried to write the ending for a novel? I know some of you have, so you know how hard it is. I was trying to lay down the tracks, after which I will go back and do some hard core editing. It needs it…a lot! Anyway, the main character is going through quite a pivotal moment in her life and I am afraid that I won’t do it justice. I need some sort of an epiphany or ethereal wisdom. I’m waiting! :-)

I have introduced various different parts of the novel to various different critting groups and have gotten various different responses. I’m sure you noticed how many times I said “various different,” but I assure you it’s because I need to be rebellious at the moment and nothing else more serious. I digress. Anyhow, some of the sections that I submitted did really well and others… not so well. Some sections I submitted knowing that they needed work; I just wanted to see what the reader response would be. Overall, I am happy with the way things turned out. If you are one of the kind people who left critiques, thank you kindly.

Moving on, I am steadfast in my decision to write and publish. I will not give up, even when the critiques get me down. Those who know me know that I love a challenge, and that I will move mountains to achieve my goals. This even includes reading boring books about writing and suffering through rejection. Futhermore, I am jumping on Nathan Bransford's positivity week bandwagon...can't get that Rainbow Connection song out of my head!

I know that you will get there. The process is long but the amount of love you put into it will be that final gratification.
I cannot explain the gratification when I finished my novel, "The Release"
When I hit that last period, an overwhelming feeling of contenment filled me from my toes to my head.

I know what you mean about the character going through a life changing event and worrying that what you write (his or her reactions, actions and thoughts) won't do the scene justice. I've been there myself with one story in particular. I think now that I've given myself some space and moved away from the story for awhile I can take a look back and hopefully accomplish what needs to be done. Good luck!

Thank you both for your supportive comments! Thanks also for stopping by.

I know what you mean by giving it space. It's just something that can't be forced. :-) I have been doing just that. I am researching my next project. Hopefully I will get some clarity soon. I would like some clarity in my own life as well! LOL

Ah yes, I can imagine that the gratification is amazing! I guess that is what gets us past all of the critiques and rejections! :-)

Thanks again!!!

So glad you stopped by my blog! Looks like you and I have a lot in common. My husband is a Shakespearean actor. That's how he hooked me when we started dating... spouting sonnets into my ear. How could I resist!?

Obviously, I love Shakespeare. My online name is Lady Glamis, and as a Shakespeare fan, I am sure you can figure out where that comes from (hint: Macbeth). My husband is Dark Thane (in other words, Macbeth).

I also love technical writing. Big, big fan. Nothing pleased me more than to write papers in college!

I hear you on the ending of your novel. Good luck! The ends are hard, but I find the beginning much harder. Hope to see you again! I've added you to my growing list of blogs. :)

I also belong to Critique Circle (CC). I have invited you into my forum. Most of my group hangs out on "The Heath" thread. Yet another Macbeth reference. *rolls eyes at self*

Feel free to introduce yourself on there if you like!

Lady Glamis,
I left a message on your blog. I am a Shakespeare nut too and I also love Jane Austen. Mr. Darcy is one of my all time fave lit characters. I also love Emily Bronte...and many other British authors. So glad you stopped by!
:-) I'll sign into CC tomorrow.

Thanks for checking out My Daley Rant. If your writing in your profile and blogging is indicative of the voice of your novel, I think I would like it!

I know that my novel is very different from my blogging, though. The times I've tried to inject my smart-assery into the larger work, it's always crash and burn.

I have finished the manuscript, and I think ending it was easier than starting it, and getting to the ending...but I know how it was going to end already.

Oh, meant to ask this...

Have you read The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett?

I kind of expect a "yes...Duh!" but if you haven't, they are two of the best novels I've ever read, and if you like historical fiction, they are top notch.

Hi Rick! So glad that you stopped by. My novel has a more serious tone than my blog. LOL

Funny you mentioned Ken Follett because I just bought The Pillars of the Earth a couple weekends ago and I plan to read both of his books! The thing is that one of my fave authors had a book come out that I had to read asap! :-D So, I will get to Pillars when I finish that one. I am VERY eager to read it.

For some reason I am sitting on the ending...not able to start it. Maybe it's not wanting it to end or endofbookaphobia? Not sure! ;-)

I abhor the writing of endings.

What a fun blog you've got going on. I'm going to have to follow you. Hehe. I agree with the Glam meister. Endings are hard, but beginnings are harder (for me at least). We seem to have quite a bit in common. Plus you live in Greenville. I grew up in Camden, SC and live in Winston-Salem, NC. So we're not that far apart geographically either.

Lotus,
Glam meister...LOL! Too funny. I am very close to Winston-Salem and am there quite a bit to visit my best friend. :-) She lives in King...but close. So glad you stopped by and that you are going to follow. I will follow you also...I love to see what other writers are up to. lol

Oi, endings are tough for sure. You have my sympathy and well wishes.

And thanks for popping by my blog. ;) I left my twitter thoughts under your comment on my post about #queryfail.
